Qualification

From very early in her academic career Marie Gethins had a strong science focus, studying anatomy, physiology, biology, zoology and chemistry. She then honed her language and presentation skills achieving two degrees simultaneously in English and Dramatic Art/ Dance from the University of California at Berkeley. She completed further study at Rochester Institute of Technology, New York gaining two certificates in Technical Communication. Marie was honoured to receive the Society for Technical Communication’s Kepner Technical Manual Award for Excellence in 2001 and an Honorable Mention in 2002.

Writing and editing for the pharmaceutical industry for almost 20 years, Marie served as the European Healthcare Editor for an American company for more than eight years, managing a team of 12 that gathered medical information in 15 countries. From mid 2004 through 2009 she also was the Global Medical Devices Editor, additionally taking on the Managing Editor role for the global healthcare group from the start of 2009. Now focusing solely on her freelance medical writer/editor work for international clients, she regularly writes in American and British English, edits non-native speakers and composes a diverse range of documents for quite varied audiences.

Marie also guest lectures for Rochester Institute of Technology’s Writing in the Sciences class and is an active member of the European Medical Writer’s Association (www.emwa.org).
